Sometimes insanely huge media companies actually come up with some good ideas: Warner has announced that starting with
Rumor Has It on May 9, they will
release movies on double-sided optical discs -- with one side playable on HD DVD players, and the other on regular DVD players. So now you can hold out for lower-priced players and still watch your movies while you wait.
It's the most stupid idea I ever heard. I would understand if it was in the blue ray format because the Blue Ray hold way more than the HD-DVD, and also customer going to have to pay more for the doubble-sided optical disc. Why would you wanna buy a double sided optical disc when you don't have a HD-DVD player, that's wasting money.
It's not quite as stupid as you think, at least from a business standpoint...some people will fork over more money if they think that they're buying a higher quality product, in this case a combo dvd..what the HD-DVD pushers are trying to do is to trick buyers into accumulating a collection of HD-DVDs so that they will feel that they NEED to buy the player even if they are tempted to change their minds later..it IS wasting money, but some people are really good at that..everyone who decides to buy those combo discs are fools because the bluray group will inevitably do the same thing and they'll end up with a collection of both discs and no player..then while they wait to buy their first high definition player they'll be scratching up the darn high def DVD surface by using it so that they'll be lucky to see boo when they finally get their hands on a high def player!!! ..please, people, for your own good, don't put the cart before the horse..buy the player first THEN get the media..
Whether it is a good marketing idea or a bad one, it is one the BluRay camp can not duplicate. HD-DVDs are built symmetrically, like standard DVDs, and can do double-sided. BluRay are more like CDs, with the data recorded on a layer very close to the label side. So, instead of buying a movie with both wide-screen and full-screen versions on one disc, you can buy a movie SD and HD on one disc. And, the retailer needs to stock only one version.
